Chair of Governors/Foundation Governor

I am a Salesian of Don Bosco, a foundation governor and currently Chair of the Governing Body, serving also as Safeguarding Governor at Chertsey High School. I have degrees in Modern History and Economics and also in Theology from the Universities of Oxford and Durham and my PhD is on the Foundation and Development of the Salesians in England. Professionally I have a Diploma in Pastoral Care and Counselling and also the NPQH and am a National Leader in Governance. I have taught in various schools and universities and been a Governor in three Salesian Schools and also served at the Secondary Advisor for RE in the diocese and am a Section 48 School Inspector. I have worked as a priest Chaplain at various universities and am currently the Catholic Chaplain at Royal Holloway, University of London, and I also help in various parishes in the Weybridge Deanery. In my spare time, I love doing historical research, cycling, swimming, and motorcycling and travelling abroad.

Vice-Chair/Safeguarding/SEN/Child Protection/Foundation Governor

I am a foundation governor and currently serve as one of the two Vice-Chairs of the Board of Governors. I am the lead, on behalf of the Governors, on Safeguarding and Child Protection, and also children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities and Cared for Children. As such, I form the link between the staff, such as the Designated Safeguarding Lead, and the Governors.

On a personal note, I had a full career of 35 years in the Army retiring in the rank of Brigadier to become the Chief Executive of a charity providing care and support to needy elderly people. I held that post for nearly 10 years before becoming the Chief Executive Officer of a Catholic Hospice, St Raphael’s in Cheam, which is part of a charity run by the Daughters of the Cross of Liège. I have a degree in Computation and a Masters in Design of Information Systems and was a Chartered Software Engineer. In my spare time, such as it is with 4 adult children and 7 grandchildren, I hold several parish appointments and am a facilitator with Catholic Marriage Care, the national marriage preparation charity.

Executive Headteacher

James has been Headteacher at Salesian School in Surrey since 2006. During this time he has also headed up a number of schools that have been in difficulty and is currently Executive Headteacher at Chertsey High School, a free school established in 2017. Salesian was designated as a Teaching School in 2014 and as a National Leader of Education, James leads on school-to-school support and professional development from pre-initial teacher training through to executive leader development. James is Deputy CEO of the Xavier Catholic Education Trust and the Teach SouthEast SCITT and a Director of the Surrey Teaching School Network.

Co-opted Governor/Literacy

I am a co-opted Governor. I joined this governing body in 1991 as a parent governor when my son was a student here and was chair of governors for three years. Previous to that I had been a parent governor at St Thomas More in East Molesley (now St. Albans) and chair of that governing body for two and a half years. I grew up in Canada and attended the University of Toronto before beginning a career as a journalist. I came to Britain in 1967 and worked in Fleet Street for 20 years as a foreign correspondent for an American news agency, United Press International. I then moved on to a second career as a project manager in the City and then worked as a freelance consultant until I retired. I am married to Ro, who works as a Health Visitor in Hounslow, and we have one son and two grandchildren, all now in Southampton. Since retiring I volunteer at the National Archives, where we are indexing naval documents from the Napoleonic wars. Otherwise, I occupy myself with family and historical research, particularly into naval history. I am a keen sailor and have a boat which I sail and race on the Solent, and in my odd spare moments do a bit of star-gazing with a telescope.

Co-opted Governor

I was appointed as a Co-opted Governor having served previously as a Sponsored Governor for many years. I am a Maths graduate from St John’s College, Oxford. After graduating, I joined the management consultancy arm of Arthur Andersen & Co. and, in 1990, I left with two colleagues to set up our own IT consultancy company, CHP Consulting Limited (now ALFA Systems Limited). Over 25 years, we built up an international software company, with over half the company’s revenues coming from outside the UK. I was specifically responsible for the Finance and HR functions. I am married to Jane – an alumna of Salesian School – and we have 3 children and 1 grandchild. Jane is also a school governor (St John Bosco College, Battersea), and we both believe firmly in the importance of education. Outside of work, we are avid sports fans, which means we suffer the highs and lows of following the England rugby and cricket teams!

Parent Governor

I have been a Salesian School Parent Governor since 2011 and have served on a number of committees during that time.  I’m married to Rachel who is a teacher in a local junior school and we have four children, two dogs and 5 goldfish [at the last count].  Three of our children have attended Salesian School and  have left to go on to university and our youngest daughter started her Salesian journey in 2018.   I have been a parent at Salesian School for over 14 years with another 6 years ahead of me.  In that time I’ve seen the changes and evolution of the school both as a parent and a Governor.  I’ve been able to pick up on items from a students perspective and been able to use this along with my business experience to contribute to the school in my role as a governor. In respect of my career, I am a degree qualified, Chartered Civil Engineer and spent most of my working life as a consultant and contractor in the building services and facilities world.  I’ve held senior business posts over the last 15 years including CEO and MD and enjoyed leading and transforming successful businesses – as well as meeting some amazing people along the way!

Foundation Governor

I am a Salesian of Don Bosco and a Foundation Governor. I qualified in Residential Social Work from Cardiff College and later studied for a Diploma in Social Work at Bristol University. I spent a year in Malta working with socially deprived children and twenty years working in a Residential School for emotionally disturbed children in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. For eight of those years, I was Head of Care. I spent ten years working in a Parish in Muirhouse, Edinburgh. This was an area of anti-social behaviour with major drug, alcohol and AIDS problems. For the last twenty years, I have been the Manager/Bursar of St John Bosco House, Farnborough, a retirement home for Salesian Brothers and Priests. For many years I was involved with HCPT (The Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust) both as a helper and Group Leader.
